Keeps the district's school buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program. Work is performed under the direction of the Facilities and Safety Director.Qualifications18 years or olderHigh School Diploma or EquivalentWorking knowledge of custodial practicesAbility to work around children and present a positive role modelAbility to effectively communicate with students, staff, and visitors to the districtPrevious experience in building and cleaning maintenance is preferredPrevious experience with hand tools and power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and hand tools preferredOne year of job-related experience working with students in an educational setting is preferredKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to follow oral or written work orders from supervisors, and to coordinate work with othersAbility to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance, or repair problems as neededAbility to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and othersAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure pertinent to the jobAbility to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snowAbility to work above ground from ladders and automatic liftsOther RequirementsAbility to lift up to 60 pounds, assistedAbility to climb laddersAbility to cooperate with people of all agesRegular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve goalsAssists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programsEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSweeping and Cleaning Classrooms and/or GymnasiumsCleaning RestroomsEmptying TrashMinor MaintenanceKeep assigned areas of the building neat and clean at all timesUnderstanding of safety protocol associated with various cleaners and chemicalsUnderstanding of the use and need for PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)Understand the usage and location of SDS (system data sheets)Regularly check to ensure that appropriate exit doors are open and all panic bars are working properly during the hours of building occupancySweeping and/or vacuuming designated classrooms and assigned areas, emptying trash cans and dusting counters, shelves, window sills, etc.Clean assigned corridors/hallways during the shift, including dusting the tops of lockers when their condition requires itDuring vacation periods, or days when students and staff are not in the building, work with custodial/maintenance staff on mid-year and/or end-of-year cleaning, maintenance and other assigned tasksLower U.S. and Washington State flags at the end of each school dayMake such minor maintenance repairs as requested or needed (within capabilities)Report all graffiti, vandalism, and/or damage of school property to the building principal, and then try to correct the problem as quickly as possibleRemain on assigned school premises during work hours unless directed otherwise by the building administrationKeep equipment and tools in good working condition, and order needed supplies, tools, equipment, and materials as requested from swing and night custodiansKeep the custodial rooms clean and orderlyMove furniture or equipment as required for various activities and as directed by the building administrationComply with the school district's regulations and the local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash and recyclable materialsRegularly communicate with the Director of Maintenance and building administrators for things needing to be done (check the mailbox daily for messages)Know the location of and how to operate all emergency shut-off equipment and security systemsTreat co-workers, supervisors, students, parents, and others with dignity and respect at all timesServe as a positive role model for students, and practice the behaviors that are expected of our studentsWork in a flexible and cooperative mannerPerform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisorPhysical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
