Non-Instructional Assistant – Substitute Health Assistant
The Substitute Health Assistant's primary responsibilities are to carry out the health-related duties assigned by the school nurse. Non-Instructional Assistants are not to work with students in a teaching capacity except as a guest lecturer or resource person under b of the Illinois School Code. She/he must exercise initiative, independent judgment, confidentiality, and discretion in the performance of her/his duties. Work assignments are generally received with explanation of what is needed, and are then performed with a considerable degree of independence and good judgment based on knowledge and experience.
Essential duties and responsibilities include:
Ensuring compliance with established board policies
Carrying out additional duties as required
Participating in job training and professional growth opportunities
Interacting with colleagues, students, parents, and others in a professional manner
Recording relevant student health information
Performing clerical duties associated with the school health program
Assisting with initiating and maintaining health records
Assisting in the compilation of communicable diseases summary report
Compiling a list of students requiring medications for field trips or events
Reporting health room activities to the School Nurse or Principal
Referring inquiries regarding student's specific health matters to the supervising School Nurse
Referring questions regarding Health Service Policies to the supervising School Nurse or Principal
Maintaining daily records of students visiting the Health Office
Observing students taking medications
Providing first aid for illness or injury
Performing lifesaving and/or medically necessary procedures with proper training
Remaining with sick and/or injured children until an authorized person arrives
Assisting or supervising student with routine hygiene
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent; college credit preferred
Multi-language fluency preferred
Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate fluently and make appropriate decisions
Ability to tolerate ambiguity and balance priorities
Ability to plan and organize to meet timelines
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to operate a computer
Ability to work independently and exercise critical thinking
Skillset to learn, interpret, and communicate district information
Excellent verbal and written skills
Knowledge of current technology
Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and rules
Position does not have supervisory responsibility and is TRS eligible.
This job operates in a professional office/school environment.
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
