Overview

nAt Navy Federal, Internal Audit’s goal is to provide independent, objective assurance and advisory services designed to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of the risk management process. Internal Audit accomplishes its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to auditing to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk mitigation across all facets of the business.

nInternal Audit includes a diverse range of professionals including certified auditors, subject matter experts who specialize in IT, finance, fraud, regulatory requirements, and data, as well as strategic personnel, all working collaboratively to ensure a seamless experience for Navy Federal and its members.

nNavy Federal is growing and the environment in which we operate is rapidly evolving, posing new and unique risks to the enterprise. As a result, Internal Audit must continuously adapt to provide assurance to our business partners through a risk-based approach that evaluates the effectiveness of governance, risk management, and the internal control environment.

nThe Summer Associate will be a member of the Internal Audit IT Audit Team and will work in a hybrid capacity reporting to leadership at our Vienna, VA, Winchester VA, or Pensacola, FL campus. This team focuses on performing audits across information technology areas including IT and information security. Responsibilities may include supporting control testing on in-flight audits, assisting with testing on issue closures, developing tools or templates to be used in the audit process, or performing in-depth research on emerging topics impacting internal audit.

nThe Summer Associate Program is a 12-week internship program beginning in May 2027 and ending in August 2027. Students will work on impactful projects and meaningful work during their internship. To qualify for this position, applicants must be currently pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university and have an anticipated graduation date of December 2027 or later.

nResponsibilities

nnnAssist with IT governance and/or application audits in accordance with Navy Federal and industry audit standards

n

nnConduct preliminary research, participate in process walkthroughs, document process narratives and workflows, identify key risks and controls, and obtain audit evidence for testing

n

nnReview and analyze audit evidence to determine design and operating effectiveness of controls

n

nnAssist in performing IT control testing. Apply critical thinking skills by seeking to understand and execute assigned control testing and document results according to professional and internal standards

n

nnPrepare audit workpapers to document relevant information obtained, analyzed, and evaluated that support audit observations/issues and conclusions

n

nnIdentify and summarize potential issues and observations to discuss with the Auditor-In-Charge in a timely manner

n

nnActively leverage Microsoft Copilot and AI agents as key tools in completing the summer project, to enhance research, analysis, automation, and deliverable development.

n

nnManage workload/timelines and report delays and issues to audit management

n

nnCollaborate with others throughout your internship, including with other Summer Associates

n

nnWork well within the team environment, take on challenging stretch assignments for professional growth and development, and have fun!

n

n nQualifications

nnnCurrently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field

n

nnFamiliarity with the internal audit function and processes

n

nnFamiliarity with one or more functions: IT Risk, General Controls, Information Security Frameworks and best practices

n

nnFamiliarity with Copilot or other AI systems

n

nnEffective research, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills

n

nnExperience in following, interpreting, and applying relevant data/instructions to guidelines, procedures, practices, and regulations

n

nnInterest in risk management, audit, and/or enterprise governance

n
