Job description
The Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education is looking an outstanding educational leader, relationship-builder, problem-solver, and steward of the community’s investment in its public schools to serve as our next Superintendent of Schools.
Our pK-12 District serves the Essex County suburban municipalities of Caldwell and West Caldwell, about 25 miles from Manhattan, both ideal for raising children. We educate 2,505 students in seven school buildings: one pre-K, four elementary and one middle school, and a single high school. We are proud of Caldwell-West Caldwell’s challenging curriculum and the wide variety of clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities offered to children at all grade levels. Our dedicated teachers in all of our schools consistently earn A ratings on Niche.com, and our schools are among the highest ranked in the County. Our Senior Administrative team comprises a Director of Special Services, a Director of Secondary Education, a Director of Elementary Education, and a full-time Business Administrator. We employ 175 non-certificated and 278 certificated employees. The Caldwell-West Caldwell School District operates on a budget of $60m and has an authentic small-district feel.
Our Superintendent will be our District’s chief educational and administrative leader, and shall be responsible for providing strategic direction and effective leadership for all aspects of district operations. Therefore, we are looking for candidates who are accomplished, collaborative, empathetic, ethical, accountable, and student-centered. The Caldwell-West Caldwell Superintendent of Schools must thoughtfully balance instruction and operations, student needs and district resources, innovation and fiscal responsibility, authentic listening and decisive leadership, transparency and professionalism, Board priorities and administrative expertise, and community aspirations and long-term strategic decision-making.
We are looking for candidates with a high degree of financial acumen and are committed to fiscal responsibility. We seek applicants who have solid knowledge of special education laws, compliance, regulations, programming, services, and best practices; along with experience in supervising, evaluating, mentoring, and developing administrators and staff. Candidates who have demonstrated experience in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and in elevating student achievement are urged to apply.
Candidates must possess a New Jersey School Administrator Certificate or Certificate of Eligibility, and a master’s degree in educational leadership, administration, or a related field. Administrative experience of five years or more, including (but not necessarily limited to) experience as a school principal or in building-level leadership is required.
Position start date: July 1, 2027
The Board expects to offer a salary in the range of $210K to $215K and a competitive benefits package including sick leave, vacation days, personal days, health insurance, vision coverage, dental insurance, and professional membership dues, to be determined. It is anticipated that the total compensation package will be regionally competitive and will be based on successful experience and education, and shall be subject to approval by the Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education and the Essex County Executive Superintendent.
