Job description
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
This is a rare one. A well-established, highly profitable boutique CPA firm in the Bradenton–Sarasota area is seeking a Tax Manager to take true ownership of its tax practice — with a genuine, defined path to partner in approximately five years. Not a someday-maybe promise: the firm is intentionally building its partnership pipeline, and this seat is part of that plan.
The work itself is different, too. The firm operates a fully outsourced accounting model — CFO advisory, back-office accounting, attestation, tax, and forensic services — and lives inside its clients' finances year-round. That means continuous, proactive planning instead of a compressed filing-season scramble, and a tax team that works hand-in-hand with accounting and advisory rather than receiving a shoebox in February. The client base is owner-operated, closely held businesses with significant construction and real estate concentration — complex, engaging work with the variety of a boutique and the quality of a much larger shop.
Emotional intelligence, coachability, and an ownership mindset are valued here as highly as technical skill. The right person wants to build and lead a practice — and will get every opportunity to do exactly that.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Own the tax service line end-to-end across a dynamic multi-client, multi-entity book of business
Review and sign off on individual, S-corporation, C-corporation, partnership, and fiduciary returns (1040, 1120-S, 1120, 1065, 1041)
Drive proactive, year-round tax planning for business owners — entity structure, compensation planning, timing, and multi-state strategy
Serve as the firm's go-to technical authority on tax matters: research, document, and defend positions
Coach, develop, and grow the tax team; plan capacity and workflow through filing season
Advise clients directly as a trusted partner alongside the firm's CFO advisory and accounting teams
Help shape the direction and growth of the tax practice with firm leadership
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Active CPA license (required for signing engagements and for the partner path)
5–8+ years of tax experience in multi-client public accounting or an outsourced/CAS environment
Multi-entity technical depth across 1040, 1120-S, 1120, 1065, and 1041
Demonstrated review experience — reviewing and signing off on the work of others
People-management experience with a record of coaching and developing staff
Hands-on, working-manager orientation
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Construction, real estate, or closely held business client experience
Owner-level tax planning for small-business owners and high-net-worth individuals
Client accounting services (CAS) or outsourced accounting experience
MST or MBA; CFF or CFE credentials
UltraTax CS, CCH Axcess or ProSystem fx, Lacerte, or Drake; QuickBooks
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Competitive base salary plus a meaningful performance bonus — this is a highly profitable firm that rewards results. Medical, dental, vision, and 401(k); CPE support and professional development; direct mentorship from the firm's founder; and a defined, demonstrated path to partner within approximately five years. Full compensation details are provided in writing before any interview.
