Job description
Schenectady, New York | $100,000-$120,000 + Performance Bonus | Ownership Opportunity | Relocation Assistance Available
Heather A. Peterson CPA, PLLC is looking for an experienced CPA to join our firm as a Tax Manager and become an important part of our future.
Located in vibrant downtown Schenectady, New York, our firm focuses on individual taxation, estates and trusts, and tax planning for individuals and families.
We are a relationship-driven firm. Our clients know us, trust us, and rely on us for much more than preparing an accurate tax return. They may be planning for retirement, administering an estate, helping an aging parent, or simply facing a tax decision that feels overwhelming.
We believe our job is to make the complex clear.
The Role
During tax season, our practice is busy, with a high volume of individual returns ranging from straightforward to complex. Outside of tax season, the work shifts toward tax planning, estate and trust matters, research, problem-solving, and deeper client conversations.
As Tax Manager, you will develop and manage your own client relationships. You will have meaningful autonomy, work directly with clients, and collaborate with attorneys, financial advisors, and other professionals when needed.
We want you to know your clients, recognize when something needs attention, and be the person they know they can call.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for a CPA with significant public accounting and tax experience.
Strong individual, estate, and tax experience is essential.
We also value experience with:
Tax planning and research
Partnership and S corporation taxation
Direct client relationships
Collaboration with attorneys, financial advisors, and other professionals
Our practice is focused on tax and advisory work. We do not perform audits and do not have a nonprofit practice.
A book of business is not required.
The Person We Hope to Find
Technical ability matters tremendously. So does who you are.
We are looking for someone who is intelligent, composed, curious, approachable, and personally accountable. Someone who communicates clearly, follows through, enjoys solving problems, and genuinely cares about the people they serve.
We are also very much a team. We share ideas, ask questions, help one another, and believe the best answer is more important than whose answer it was.
Opportunity & Benefits
For someone who becomes aligned with our clients, culture, and vision, there is a genuine opportunity for future ownership.
Salary: $100,000-$120,000, based on experience and level of responsibility.
Benefits include:
Year-end performance bonus
SIMPLE IRA with 3% company match
HSA-eligible health insurance options
Health, dental and vision insurance available with stipend
Life insurance
Cafeteria plan benefits available (FLEX, Dep Care, etc)
Unlimited vacation after five years
Flexible work schedule outside of tax season
Relocation assistance available
Continuing professional education and professional development support
We also believe strongly in supporting professionals who want to continue advancing their careers while balancing family responsibilities.
Why Heather A. Peterson CPA, PLLC?
We believe you can do serious professional work and enjoy where you work.
We want our team to work hard, take pride in what they accomplish, and still have lives outside the office. We value flexibility, family, community, humor, strong relationships, and enjoying the people you work with.
If you are an experienced CPA who enjoys tax work and solving problems, values personal relationships, and wants a career where you can be professionally challenged, personally happy, and have a meaningful voice in the future of the firm, we would like to meet you.
