WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY As a(n) Technical Writer-Editor, you will: Writing and editing scientific, technical, and general materials to ensure factual accuracy, clarity, organization, style, and suitability for intended audiences. Analyzing subject matter, audiences, and publication requirements to determine appropriate content, format, style, emphasis, and presentation. Writing and editing high-visibility scientific and technical publications with authority to make editorial decisions based on purpose and intended use. Gathering and verifying scientific and technical data and developing reports, articles, web content, fact sheets, brochures, training materials, and other publications. Providing guidance on scientific and medical publications and supporting the production and presentation of clear, accurate, and meaningful technical information.
Qualifications
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Basic Qualification Requirements for 1083 Technical Writing and Editing Series: A. Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Must have included a total of 15 semester hours in an appropriate scientific, technical, or social science field(s), and at least one course above the introductory level in the field(s) covered by the position. For technical manuals and specifications writers or editors, the equivalent of 15 semester hours may have been gained through vocational or educational training above the high school level at a public, private, or Armed Forces school. OR B. Experience that required substantial subject-matter or technical knowledge of the field. This experience must have demonstrated the ability to acquire and present technical information through independent reading, interviews with subject-matter specialists, observation of tests and experiments, interpretation of blueprints or diagrams, or other appropriate methods. Such experience may have been acquired as a writer or editor of technical reports, articles, manuals, or specifications. Minimum Qualifications: You must have one-year specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following: 1. Performing substantive and developmental editing of complex scientific manuscripts and technical documents, evaluating organization, logical flow, clarity, scientific terminology, consistency, and adherence to applicable editorial and publication standards; 2. Consulting with scientific authors and subject-matter experts on the development and revision of manuscripts, providing expert guidance on structure, content organization, technical clarity, and presentation while preserving the accuracy and intent of the underlying scientific work; and 3. Coordinating the review, revision, and finalization of scientific publications and technical products, resolving editorial issues, reconciling author and reviewer comments, applying formatting and style requirements, and ensuring high-priority products meet established quality standards and deadlines.
