University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is seeking hepatologists and transplant hepatologists interested in helping build the next chapter of hepatology care on the Gulf Coast.

UTMB has identified hepatology as its highest-priority recruitment focus and is making a significant institutional commitment to hepatology expansion, including development of a future liver transplant program, expanded liver disease services, recruitment of additional transplant-focused specialists, and substantial investment in clinical and research infrastructure.

This position offers far more than a traditional faculty role. The incoming physician will have the opportunity to shape clinical strategy, participate in program development, collaborate with emerging transplant leadership, and help create a comprehensive hepatology service that will serve a rapidly growing patient population.

- Potential for protected leadership time and expanded academic support.

- Opportunity to help develop and expand multidisciplinary liver disease service.

- Collaborate with newly recruited transplant-focused clinical and research leadership.

- Participate in fellowship education, mentoring, and curriculum development.

- Robust research support, including biostatistics, grant management, registries, and clinical research infrastructure.

- Develop multidisciplinary liver disease programs and academic initiatives.

- Academic appointment with promotion opportunities.

- Flexible career pathways for clinician educators and physician-scientists.

- Flexible lifestyle options throughout the Greater Houston and Gulf Coast region.

Candidate Qualifications

- MD or DO

- Board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology

- Advanced training in Hepatology or Transplant Hepatology preferred

- Eligible for Texas medical licensure

Why UTMB?

UTMB offers a unique opportunity to join a division that is actively investing in the future of gastroenterology and hepatology. Physicians can build meaningful academic careers while maintaining a strong clinical practice, participating in fellowship education, developing subspecialty expertise, and contributing to the growth of an institution committed to innovation, collaboration, and long-term success. The combination of academic opportunity, clinical complexity, institutional support, and Greater Houston lifestyle flexibility creates a compelling destination for gastroenterologists seeking lasting impact.

Facility Location

Tucked along the Gulf Coast region, Galveston is a hip beach town with plenty to keep you busy when not working. From the eclectic boutiques and galleries to the famed historic neighborhoods, people flock from all over the U.S. to visit the city’s sandy beaches. Stopover at Moody Gardens to see aquariums and other attractions, or visit the trendy area known as “The Strand” for its yearly Mardi Gras celebration.
