Salary: Manual Trades/Hourly MT7 261 Days Min. $22.11 Hourly

Primary Purpose
The Transportation Mechanic/Technician II is responsible for performing advanced inspection and/or repair of district vehicles.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
High School Diploma or GED
Current ASE/TASBT Technician Certification
Acceptable driving record in accordance with Texas DPS guidelines for school bus drivers
Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License with P and S endorsements
Pass annual DOT physical and drug screen and all other requirements of school bus drivers
Must have the ability to clear a criminal background check
Special Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of advanced bus automotive mechanics
Knowledge of various Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to vehicle maintenance, inspection, and repair.
Knowledge of tools, parts, procedures, technical skills, operating principals, and safety rules used in the maintenance and repair of buses and equipment.
Knowledge of public sector purchasing and procurement procedures
Skill in inspecting equipment and diagnosing mechanical defects.
Skill in working from drawings, specifications and other technical materials.
Skill in diagnosing mechanical problems and having the correct repairs performed.
Skill in scheduling preventive maintenance, inspections, and tire replacement on medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles
Skill in comprehending and evaluating facts and problems associated with vehicle maintenance and repair; exercising sound judgment; and taking decisive and timely action in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Skill in providing, utilizing, and understanding complex and technical information and explaining vehicle specifications and mechanical situations.
Skill in gathering/organizing/analyzing/interpreting data, utilizing various techniques, applying concepts to assist in formulating conclusions and developing recommendations and solutions
Skill in operating MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written, utilizing tact and diplomacy.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with District staff, outside organizations, elected officials, and the general public.
Experience
Minimum of five years' experience in general automotive repair in a heavy volume automotive, trucking, or bus environment.
Current training on auto/truck maintenance and repair systems.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
1. Demonstrates diagnostic potential on vehicles for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or part replacements. Including but not limited to, vehicle electrical systems, auto/bus air conditioning, brake systems (air hydraulic, hydrovac) engine maintenance and overhaul (gas/diesel) automatic and standard transmissions, suspension and drivetrain components.
2. Assists lead technicians in implementing shop procedures and policies through example and instruction to others.
3. Perform mechanical and electrical repairs as needed.
4. Help lead technicians complete minor and major repairs.
5. Perform additional specialty duties as assigned, including but not limited to, paint and body repair, vehicle tire maintenance and repair, gasoline and diesel repair, transmission repair.
6. Service vehicles according to an established preventive maintenance schedule. Rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels.
7. Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance.
8. Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed.
9. Demonstrate knowledge and processes of preventive maintenance and visual inspections to technician helpers or student interns.
10. Perform preventive maintenance services on vehicles using mechanical shop equipment according to established schedules.
Safety
1. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
2. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
3. Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.
4. Assist in maintaining shop cleanliness, servicing equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
5. Assists shop foreman in the operation of the maintenance shop including opening and closing facility as assigned.
Policy, Reports, and Laws 1. Follow federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in transportation area. 2. Compile, maintain, file, and present all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents, required in transportation area. 3. Comply with applicable personnel policies.

Equipment Used
Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drill, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack, lift equipment, and operation and repair of school buses and district vehicles. This list is not inclusive and may be modified to fit the job assigned.

Prolonged and irregular hours Frequent walking, standing, sitting, lying on back, hand/eye foot coordination, climbing, stooping/bending, bilateral/forward/overhead reaching, gross/fine manipulation, use of senses, kneeling/squatting, reaching, lifting/carrying with lifting as follows: o Requires on a daily basis: standing 5-7 hours, walking 1-4 hours, forward bending or stooping 1-3 hours, trunk rotation up to one hour, sitting or lying on back 1 to 3 hours, squatting or kneeling 1 to 3 hours, climbing or crawling up to an hour. o Requires us of senses: vision is used constantly, hearing is used constantly, and feel is essential to most functions. o Requires the use of hands and feet as follows: Bilateral hand/arm use from 3 to 7 hours per day, reaching from floor to 60 inches above floor while standing, reaching forward up to 36 inches for tools or parts, unilateral arm use both left and right up to 30 inches from the body, use of feet for driving and road-testing buses. o Requires the use of hand power tools weighing from 1 to 38 pounds, exertion of force by pushing or pulling on tools up to 80 pounds, occasional force on tools up to 145 pounds pulling on ratchet, occasionally requires climbing and working on a ladder up to 12 feet. o Requires lifting and carrying as follows: lifting, holding and using tools weighing up to 40 pounds; lifting and carrying parts up to 50 pounds up to 200 feet; lifting, with assistance, parts weighing up to 220 pounds. o Requires pushing and pulling as follows: pushing and pulling open bus hoods approximately 70 pounds of force, pulling or pushing carts and wheels requiring approximately 100 pounds of force pushing and pulling wrenches requiring up to 14
