Overview
The Level 1 Ultrasound Technologist operates ultrasound and non‑invasive vascular equipment to perform examinations, maintain equipment quality, and support patient care within Methodist Le Bonheur Hospital. The position requires adherence to hospital, DNV, and accreditation standards.
Responsibilities
Perform ultrasound examinations as established in the Radiology/Ultrasound Procedure Guide.
Provide ongoing patient assessment through observation and accurate reporting of findings.
Assist in the development of others through guidance and teaching.
Promote professional practice of all radiology services team members.
Participate in quality monitoring and evaluation activities to meet hospital, DNV, and other quality standards.
Ensure equipment performance is optimal, performing quality control tests and adjustments to maximize image quality.
Obtain required continuing education and certification to maintain lab accreditation with the ACR.
Seek continuing education offerings to enhance technical skills and exam quality.
Coordinate patient care and departmental communications among radiology services team members.
Attend and participate in departmental or hospital committees as appointed or assigned.
Maintain supply inventory, including film, drugs, and expendable supplies.
Demonstrate knowledge and competent operation of RIS/PACS within job scope.
Education and Training
Required: Associate’s Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Preferred: Associate’s Degrees in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, or Vascular Technology.
Preferred: Bachelor’s Degrees in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Ultrasound/Sonography.
Preferred: Technical Degrees or Diplomas in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Ultrasound/Sonography.
Licenses and Certifications
Required: BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (American Heart Association).
Required: Registered Vascular Technologist (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography).
Preferred: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer – Obstetrics and Gynecology, Abdomen, or Breast (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Skill in performing ultrasound examinations in designated areas.
Ability to understand and prepare complex written materials, such as patient records and technical manuals.
Ability to communicate verbally with co‑workers, physicians, patients, and families.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects while maintaining workflow control.
Physical Demands
The position may require climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion. Tasks include exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently, maintaining visual acuity, small‑field focus, and reacting quickly to emergencies.
