Job description
Emergency Department ClerkCoordinates the clerical activities of the Emergency Department. Maintains patient privacy, dignity, confidentiality, and respects patients' rights. Functions as the focal communication source in the nursing station.Essential Functions and Responsibilities:Transcribes information onto patient charts, into log books and notes ordersHandles telephone calls (inside lines, outside lines, EMS calls and patient call system)Prepares patient charges using physician notes, nursing notes and treatment documentationEnters charges onto SMS computer terminalAssembles charts, maintains department filing and orders supplies as neededDirects visitors, staff, physicians and outside agency representatives to patient areaPerforms typing duties as assignedSchedules and prepares charges for outpatient proceduresCoordinates calls to special agencies as needed (e.g., police, animal control, etc.)Orders patient nourishments as neededAssists in data collection for monthly reports/assists with employee timekeepingEnters test results into the patient chart during down timeCompletes transfer log and admission logRuns errands when directedPerforms other department related duties as assignedQualifications:Required:High school diploma or equivalentKnowledge of keyboard/computer and typing experienceData entry experienceMedical terminology knowledgeBLS certification within 3 months of hirePreferred:Previous experience or training as Unit ClerkPosition Specific Expectations:Deals with highly confidential patient medical informationMust respond to demands from nursing staff, physicians, patients and patient familiesRequires patience and excellent guest relations skillsParticipates in Medical Center and/or departmental quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities as directed through identification of quality improvement opportunities, goal setting, collection and evaluation of data, implementation of action plans, or related applicationsAccess to Protected Health Information in any format, whether oral, written, or through Electronic Information Systems will be in accordance with HIPAA guidelines and subject to disciplinary action when misused. Access to electronic information systems for this position is based on criteria found in a pre-determined systems access matrix for classification specific job function, found in HR Policy #580, "Using, Disclosing, and Requesting Only the Minimum Amount of Protected Health Information Necessary".Operates the following machinery: SMS computer, Care Manager terminal
