Job description
CVETS | Columbia, South Carolina
CVETS is seeking an experienced veterinarian to join our team as a Veterinary Hospitalist dedicated exclusively to inpatient care .
This is not a traditional emergency position. There are no scheduled outpatient appointments and no expectation to manage the front door of a busy ER. Instead, our hospitalists focus on what happens after the patient is admitted: providing excellent medical management, coordinating care, communicating with specialists and clients, and helping our hospitalized patients move safely toward discharge.
CVETS is a large, privately owned, 24/7 emergency, trauma, and specialty hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. Our hospitalists work alongside a collaborative team of specialists, emergency doctors, residents, interns, nurses, and support staff while managing a diverse and challenging inpatient caseload.
The Role
As a CVETS Hospitalist, your primary responsibility will be the management of hospitalized patients.
Responsibilities may include:
Managing medical and postoperative inpatients
Performing examinations and reassessments throughout the shift
Developing and adjusting treatment plans
Reviewing diagnostics and monitoring response to therapy
Coordinating care with emergency doctors and specialists
Communicating with clients regarding patient progress
Facilitating transfers between services and levels of care
Identifying patients appropriate for discharge and helping streamline the discharge process
Responding to changes in patient condition and coordinating escalation of care when necessary
Maintaining clear and thorough medical records
You'll have access to the resources of a major specialty hospital, including advanced imaging, surgery, internal medicine, oncology, neurology, critical care capabilities, and a highly trained nursing team.
Choose the Schedule That Fits Your Life
We are considering candidates for either of two schedule models:
Mid-Shift Hospitalist
4:00 PM – 2:00 AM
Monday through Thursday
Weekend Hospitalist
7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Friday through Sunday
Both schedules provide significant stretches of time away from the hospital and avoid the traditional rotating ER schedule.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for a veterinarian who is confident managing hospitalized patients and enjoys complex medical and postoperative cases.
ER, urgent care, internship, hospitalist, or specialty-hospital experience is preferred. Completion of a rotating internship is a plus but is not required for an experienced clinician with strong inpatient skills.
Most importantly, we're looking for someone who enjoys practicing medicine, collaborating with specialists, and taking ownership of hospitalized patients.
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) degree from an accredited institution.
Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in South Carolina (or eligibility for licensure).
Strong clinical skills in emergency medicine and critical care.
Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving abilities, especially under pressure.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately with clients and colleagues.
Demonstrated commitment to providing high-quality and timely patient care.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a fast-paced, collaborative team.
Proficiency in maintaining accurate medical records.
Ability to handle stressful situations with composure and efficiency.
