Job description
SCI’s been around 26 years, leading the market in fuel management, distribution and tracking offering both software and hardware solutions. FuelB4, SCI’s flagship software offers a fuel distribution management platform for petroleum marketers. It covers dispatch and delivery, tank monitoring, cardlock and FOB fuel management, fleet management, route optimization and ERP integration. We also build and ship the hardware that goes with it: cardlock controllers, tank monitors, fuel terminals. Our customers run bulk fuel, cardlock, lubricant and transport operations across the US and Canada and use FuelB4 every day to run their business.
FuelB4 is an established product with a loyal customer base. We have a multi-year modernization plan in front of us, and we are hiring our first VP of Engineering to lead it. You will own the platform, the compliance program and the engineering team.
What you will own
Delivery. The engineering process across the web platform, the Android tablet app and device firmware. CI/CD, environment strategy, automated testing and a release schedule that customers can plan around.
Compliance. Our SOC 2 Type II program, from readiness through audit. PCI DSS posture for the cardlock and payment path. You will be the person our enterprise customers talk to about security and compliance.
Modernization. A phased modernization of both our backend and web frontend. This includes API redesign, data layer optimization, breaking up large controllers and moving the frontend to a current framework, all without disrupting customers.
Hardware. The next generation payment terminal program (EMV, PIN pad, NFC, Class I Div 2 hazardous location compliance) and the roadmaps for our tank monitors and cardlock controllers, working with our hardware partners.
Team. Hiring, structuring and leading the engineering group, employees and contractors. Setting standards. Advising on build, buy or partner decisions on third party services like route optimization, telematics, payments and mapping.
A typical week
Some weeks you are writing code. Most weeks you are reviewing it and deciding what gets built.
Report to the the board on delivery, risk and spend.

You will own the platform, the compliance program and the engineering team.
Run the engineering standup and the weekly release review. Decide what ships and what waits.
Review pull requests on the .NET backend and SQL layer. Pair with engineers on the difficult ones.
Work through production issues with support and implementation. Own the root cause and the fix.
Push the SOC 2 control work forward with our compliance partner: evidence, policies, access reviews, vendor risk.
Meet with hardware and firmware partners on the terminal and controller programs. Turn certification requirements into engineering requirements.
Sit down with product, implementation and sales to scope customer commitments.
Manage the Azure environment and its cost, the CI/CD pipeline and monitoring.
What we are looking for
Required
12 or more years in software engineering, with at least 5 years leading engineers and at least one role as the top engineering leader for a production B2B product.
Strong hands-on .NET/C# and SQL Server skills. You have led the modernization of a mature ASP.NET application yourself and worked on a stored procedure-based data layer under production load.
Azure experience: App Service or VMs, Azure SQL or SQL Server on Azure, Key Vault, Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions, networking, backup and disaster recovery.
Formal issue tracking software experience, such as Jira or DevOps.
You have taken a product through SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001
You have hired and run a small team (5 to 20 people) that included contractors or offshore partners.
You are comfortable with limited resources and incomplete information. You still like to code.
Nice to have
Software that talks to hardware: embedded devices, IoT telemetry, payment terminal integration or Android apps deployed in the field.
Experience moving a large production frontend from jQuery to React or similar.
Integration heavy products. ERP experience helps. Telematics (Samsara) and route optimization APIs are a plus.
Background in fuel distribution, petroleum marketing, logistics, dispatch or field service.
Not required
Petroleum industry experience. We can teach you the industry.
