Job description

We are looking for a hands-on Controller to take ownership of the accounting function within a rapidly growing organization. This is a high-impact opportunity for an accounting leader who enjoys building - not simply maintaining - a finance operation.

The ideal candidate has experience operating in a fast-paced environment where processes and infrastructure are still evolving. You will have significant ownership over the accounting function, while also partnering across the organization to strengthen systems, improve reporting, introduce automation, and establish the controls necessary to support continued growth.

This role is particularly well suited to someone with a strong accounting foundation who is excited by technology and interested in using AI and automation to make finance more efficient and scalable.

This is an onsite position based in the Flatiron District of Manhattan.

Key Responsibilities

Take ownership of the company's accounting function, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting

Manage the month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, revenue recognition, and account analysis

Establish and enhance accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and documentation

Build the infrastructure and processes required to support the company's growth and increasing financial complexity

Lead preparation for external audit activities, including developing audit-ready documentation, supporting schedules, and control processes

Partner with external accounting resources and oversee outsourced activities to ensure quality, accuracy, and timely completion

Improve AP, expense management, procurement, purchasing, vendor management, and related financial workflows

Develop reporting that provides leadership with meaningful visibility into company spending, operating expenses, vendors, and other key financial drivers

Identify opportunities to automate manual accounting processes and leverage emerging AI capabilities to improve efficiency and accuracy

Evaluate accounting technology and systems with an emphasis on scalability, data integrity, controls, and ease of use

Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Operations, Product, Engineering, and Finance, on financial processes and systems

Develop processes that enable a more efficient and streamlined close cycle

Act as a hands-on accounting resource, digging into detailed issues when necessary while maintaining a broader view of the organization's financial infrastructure

Provide management with reliable financial information and analysis to support business decisions

What We're Looking For

6–12 years of progressive accounting and finance experience

Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leader with meaningful ownership of the accounting function

Experience building, implementing, or significantly improving accounting processes within a high-growth or evolving organization

Strong technical accounting and financial reporting foundation

Demonstrated experience managing the month-end close, reconciliations, accruals, and financial reporting

Experience preparing an organization for an external audit or strengthening audit readiness

Strong understanding of accounting controls, policies, and financial processes

Experience working with outsourced accounting providers or external finance resources

Comfortable operating as a hands-on individual contributor while also establishing scalable processes

Strong systems orientation with an interest in accounting technology, automation, and AI

Ability to evaluate existing workflows and identify opportunities to improve efficiency through technology

Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills

High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-moving environment

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

CPA strongly preferred

Public accounting or external audit experience is a plus

Experience with a high-growth technology or startup environment is a plus

What You'll Bring

We're looking for someone who is comfortable balancing execution and infrastructure building - a Controller who can own today's accounting while creating the processes, systems, and controls needed for tomorrow. You should be curious about technology, willing to challenge inefficient ways of working, and excited by the opportunity to help shape how a modern finance function operates.
