Job Description
The duties of the Water Equipment Operator are to perform skilled and unskilled maintenance work operating a variety of equipment in the construction repair maintenance and replacement of the City's water distribution and sewer collection systems. This is an underground excavations position.
Job Responsibilities
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification; only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional; position-specific duties.
Operates a variety of equipment including backhoes; excavators; front end loaders; tractors and dump trucks and utilize a variety of hand tools. Primarily excavating water and wastewater lines underground.
Performs scheduled and preventative maintenance and repairs.
Diagnoses and repairing water and wastewater lines.
Performs emergency repairs of the water and wastewater systems in all types of weather conditions.
Installs new water and wastewater service connections.
Performs routing maintenance on City vehicles; tools and equipment.
Maintains accurate records and documents work orders; repairs; etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of one (1) year experience and/or training in water distribution or related field; preferred.
Minimum of one (1) year experience in operation of light and heavy equipment; preferred.
Must be able to work an "on-call" schedule when assigned or in severe weather conditions as needed.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Valid Texas driver's license and acceptable driving record.
Valid Texas Class "B" CDL; preferred; if hired without; must obtain within six (6) months from the hire date.
TCEQ Class "D" or higher water certification; preferred; if hired without; must obtain within one (1) year from date of hire.
Required Knowledge of: Safety policies; procedures; and practices.
Applicable local; State; and Federal laws; codes; regulations; and ordinances including 811 locate procedure.
Ability to read; comprehend; retain and apply City and State policies and legislation; ie; City ordinances; policy and procedures manuals; etc.
Required Skill in:
Following written and verbal instructions.
Maintaining a professional manner when interacting with City employees and the public.
Reading and interpreting maintenance and equipment manuals.
Reading; comprehension; retaining and applying City and State policies and legislation; i.e. City ordinances; policy and procedures manuals; etc.
Operating a variety of equipment including hand-tools; chain saws; mowers; weed eaters; etc.
Reasoning Abilities:
Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations.
Ability to think quickly; maintain self-control and adapt to stressful situations.
Ability to maintain all required licenses and certifications.
Ability to use good judgement and effectively problem-solve.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff; supervisor; and the public.
Ability to read City policies and procedures; written instructions; general correspondence; MSDS sheets; safety manuals; traffic signs and warning labels.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate basic mathematical calculations (addition; subtraction; multiplication; division).

Physical Demands:

Job requires lifting of heavy objects weighing approximately 50 pounds.
