nWhat Financial Assistance Counseling (RCM) contributes to Cardinal Health

nPractice Operations Management oversees the business and administrative operations of a medical practice.

nFinancial assistance counselors guide patients through their healthcare financial obligations.

nThe Coordinator, Financial Counseling is responsible for supporting patients and providers by ensuring accurate financial clearance, patient education, and identification of financial risk prior to services being rendered.

nThis role plays a critical part in the Revenue Cycle by improving reimbursement outcomes, minimizing financial risk, and enhancing the patient experience through proactive and transparent financial communication.

nResponsibilities

nFinancial Counseling & Patient Support

nnnReview daily schedules to identify patients requiring financial clearance.

n

nnEducate patients on expected financial responsibility, including:

n

nnDeductibles

n

nnCopayments

n

nnCoinsurance

n

nnOut-of-pocket maximums

n

nnProvide clear, compassionate communication regarding treatment costs and payment expectations prior to TOS.

n

nnAssist patients in understanding their financial obligations prior to services.

n

n nFinancial Risk Identification

nnnEvaluate potential financial risks associated with scheduled services, including:

n

nnCoverage limitations

n

nnMedical necessity concerns

n

nnFrequency limitations

n

nnOut of Network Benefits and coverages

n

nnProactively identify accounts that may result in patient balance or denied claims.

n

nnEscalate high-risk accounts to leadership or appropriate teams for review.

n

n nDenials Prevention & Support

nnnCollaborate with clinical and administrative teams to reduce the risk of claim denials.

n

nnSupport resolution of pre-service financial issues that may impact reimbursement.

n

nnAssist in identifying trends related to financial risk and patient responsibility.

n

n nDocumentation & Compliance

nnnMaintain accurate documentation of all financial discussions with patients.

n

nnEnsure all notes are clear, complete, and compliant with organizational standards.

n

nnProtect patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards.

n

n nCollaboration & Communication

nnnWork closely with clinical and administrative teams to ensure alignment on patient financial readiness.

n

nnCommunicate effectively with internal teams to support accurate and timely revenue cycle processes.

n

nnProvide exceptional customer service with empathy, professionalism, and respect.

n

n nOperational Excellence

nnnManage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

n

nnDemonstrate strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

n

nnMaintain consistent attendance, punctuality, and teamwork.

n

nnSupport additional duties and projects as they are assigned.

n nQualifications

nnnMinimum of 4 years of experience in a healthcare business office or revenue cycle role preferred

n

nnStrong knowledge of insurance and benefits and patient Financial Assistance Programs

n

nnStrong understanding of oncology treatment pathways

n

nnFamiliarity with high-cost oncology drugs, infusion services and specialty pharmacy billing preferred

n

nnWorking knowledge of diagnosis driven financial impact (metastatic vs early stage treatment cost difference) preferred

n

nnExperience with billing systems and interpreting EOBs

n

nnProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

n

nnStrong organizational, analytical, and communication skills

n

nnAbility to navigate multiple systems with ease, i.e. EMR, Registration/PMS systems, VOB systems, verifying Auth and Financial clearance with minimal direction from supervisor(s) and leadership.

n

nnCritical thinking and ability to think outside the box, adapt to process and workflow changes easily.

n

nnExperience in oncology or specialty care preferred

n

nnWorking knowledge of: ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding, managed care concepts and fee structures

n

nnBackground in financial counseling or patient-facing financial roles

n

n nWhat is expected of you and others at this level

nnnEffectively applies knowledge of job and company policies and procedures to complete a variety of assignments

n

nnIn-depth knowledge in technical or specialty area

n

nnApplies advanced skills to resolve complex problems independently

n

nnMay modify process to resolve situations

n

nnWorks independently within established procedures; may receive general guidance on new assignments

n

nnMay provide general guidance or technical assistance to less experienced team members

n

n nAnticipated hourly range: $21.00 - $27.72 USD
