Job description
Flag Team Advisor
Youngstown City School District is seeking a Flag Team Advisor to develop and lead the middle school Flag Team as part of the YCSD Middle School Pep Band and developing YCSD drumline program.
Responsibilities
Recruit and retain students for the YCSD Flag Team
Lead after-school practices and prepare students for performances
Teach flag fundamentals, routines, movement, timing, formations, and performance technique
Develop and reinforce an energetic, HBCU-inspired performance style
Develop students in performance discipline, teamwork, confidence, and leadership
Coordinate routines and performances with the Middle School Pep Band Director
Collaborate with Pep Band staff and other YCSD staff
Prepare and supervise students for athletic, district, and community performances
Maintain an accurate inventory of flags, uniforms, equipment, and supplies
Make purchasing recommendations based on program needs and growth
Participate in and travel to skill-building events, clinics, performances, and other learning opportunities
Engage families to support participation and future band booster development
Assist with student recruitment and community outreach
Participate in summer band/drumline camp and other summer skill-building activities
Participate in professional learning and coaching connected to program development
Report to the Middle School Pep Band Director and Fine Arts Supervisor
Other duties as assigned
Selected evenings, weekends, performances, travel, clinics, summer programming, and skill-building opportunities as scheduled.
Compensation Hourly Rate Preferred Qualifications
Experience coaching, advising, or performing with a flag team, color guard, marching band, dance team, or related performance group
Experience working with middle school students
Experience recruiting and retaining students
Knowledge of flag technique, movement, routines, and performance fundamentals
Ability to teach HBCU-style choreography and performance skills
Ability to motivate students and develop student leadership
Ability to collaborate with instrumental music and performance staff
Experience with HBCU-style performance traditions preferred
Willingness to participate in professional learning, summer programming, and travel connected to program development
