INTRODUCTION

This is a part-time position in the Parks & Recreation Department, working with the Valley Park Summer Day Camp and P.A.R.K. After School Program.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include but are not limited to, the following:

Provide supervised transportation of children to program sites within the city and off-site excursions

Set-up, oversee, and assist as needed with daily participant check-in and check-out

Assist with organizing and implementing homework time, arts and crafts, physically active games, and other creative activities for participants ranging from 6-12 years old

Arrange and provide appropriate snacks or meals when applicable

Responsible for direct supervision and safety of participants

Communicate effectively with peers and supervisory staff

Serve as the direct point of contact to the Youth Programs Counselors, participants and parents when the Recreation Coordinator is off-site and involve the Youth Programs Coordinator as needed

Provide parents/guardians with daily verbal or written feedback on their child and program activities

Be attentive to participant and parent concerns

Maintain the safety of programs; respond to emergency situations and complete appropriate forms

Attend and co-lead all counselor meetings and trainings

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Ability To: Complete work with limited supervision;

Provide direction to other staff;

Interpret and explain pertinent program policies and procedures;

Manage time and prioritize workload;

Provide exceptional customer service and respond to public inquiries and complaints in an effective and tactful manner;

Work cooperatively in a team environment;

Manage time and prioritize workload;

Work well under pressure;

Work in a busy environment with constant disruptions and distractions;

Solve problems while making sound judgement.

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this required knowledge would be: Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from high school.

Previous experience working with children and youth.

Supervisory experience including effective training practices for new employees.

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age or older. Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Physical Demands:

Work requires frequent lifting up to 40 pounds, carrying, standing for long periods of time, bending, and reaching. The ability to work outdoors in both heat and cold is also required.
