Lifeguard PositionAs a thought-leader and best-in-class provider in education, wellness, youth development, and community-building, The YMCA of Metro Atlanta is one of the oldest and most essential non-profits serving in Atlanta. In the course of a year, we provide more than 3,000 children, ages 6 weeks through Pre-K with high-quality literacy and STEAM-infused learning; give 58,000 youth and teens access to sports, aquatics, day and resident camps, teen leadership development programs, and employment opportunities; provide over 200,000 members with programs, services, and facilities to enjoy connection and maintain wellness regardless of age; and engage over 25,000 volunteers and donors from across Atlanta to share in the gift of supporting their communities.Nature and ScopeUnder the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. They create a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include, but are not limited to:Maintains active surveillance of the pool areaKnows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures and completes related reports as requiredKnows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areasMaintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or local and state health department codePerforms equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as neededPerforms chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate actionMaintain branch and association certifications in CPR-O, YMCA Lifeguard, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, Branch and off-site Emergency procedures, and any other required certifications and/or training required by the Metro Atlanta YMCA.Assist as needed in all aspects of the YMCA and its communityAttends all staff meetings and monthly in-service trainingShow up 15 minutes prior to shift start timeWear YMCA Approved Uniform- Red YMCA Lifeguard Shirt, solid colored shorts, swim suit, lifeguard tube with strap across chest and slack adequately controlled, fully stocked fanny pack with mask, gloves, and basic first aid, and BREAKAWAY Lanyards with whistle.RequirementsMinimum age of 16Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administrationCurrent YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent (If not YMCA MUST be crossed over in first 60 days)Ability to respond in a timely manner to safety and emergency situationsExemplify YMCA ideals and leadership qualitiesExcellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skillsStrong customer service skills and personal commitment to service and hospitalityWork Environment & Physical Demands:Physically perform all skills required of a Lifeguard.
