Job description

Painter & Loader - Structural SteelOur company is looking for an experienced Structural Steel material loader. The ideal candidate should be proficient in operating overhead cranes, and should understand the process of priming/painting steel.Under the direct supervision of the Shop Manager, the employee will be responsible for painting, loading, and unloading structural steel components such as columns and beams onto or from trucks using overhead cranes, in addition to a variety of other tasks relating to the shipment of products. These items include but are not limited to:Operate overhead cranes, tractors, loaders and other equipment to transport materials to and from the paint bay and transportation vehicles, and to store and retrieve materials within shop and yard.Apply paint, or other finishes to steel, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers as required by job specifications.Must be able to wear a respirator for extended periods of time.Read and interpret work lists, written instructions and diagrams to perform task at hand.Wire brush and scrape as necessary to achieve proper surface texture per job specifications.Cover surfaces with drop-cloths or tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the painting and loading trade.Analyze painting specifications, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan painting and loading needs.Must be able to set up and climb ladders and stairs to work on flatbed trailers.Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment.Prepare all material surfaces to be painted, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter.Mark or tag material with proper job number, piece marks, and other identifying marks as required.Check conditions of trailers to ensure cleanliness, safety and compliance with loading procedures.Other duties as assigned by supervisor.Required Skills:High school diploma or equivalentReliable transportation and clean driving recordAbility to speak, read and write in EnglishValid driver's licensePhysically capable of lifting/pushing/pulling 70 pounds unassistedPhysically capable of bending/twisting as well as standing for long periods of timeAble to work well with minimal supervision as well as with other co-workers.Ability to prioritize tasks and follow specified proceduresSelf-motivated, detail oriented and has a positive attitudeWillingness to work overtime as neededMust be willing to submit a drug test and background checkBenefits:Competitive salary (based on skill set)Health Insurance (includes annual vision exam)Dental InsuranceLife Insurance401(k) Plan with Employer Match / Profit SharingFull Time Position / First Shift (additional overtime as required)Vacation / Holidays / Earned Days / BirthdaysShepard Steel is a structural steel and miscellaneous metals fabrication company that has been an integral part of the Connecticut construction landscape for over 65 years.
