Job description

Location: Salem Hospital, 890 Oak Street SE, Salem, Oregon 97301

Department: Outreach Phlebotomy

Position Type: Part Time, 24 hours/week, Non-Exempt

Schedule: Monday - Friday with varying start times; Saturdays 7:30 am - 1:15 pm; Four 10-hour shifts

Your role with us

The phlebotomist at Salem Health plays a vital role in our outreach services, serving as a key point of contact for patients and care facilities while ensuring the accurate collection and processing of specimens. This position is a great fit for a detail-oriented and compassionate individual with strong technical and interpersonal skills who can work independently in a variety of settings. The ideal candidate will be a proactive professional committed to patient safety, quality service and effective communication with clients and the broader healthcare team.

What you'll do

Obtain appropriate samples from patients through venipuncture, capillary collection and swabs as ordered.

Manage and prioritize daily blood collections at nursing homes and other care facilities.

Effectively communicate with providers and facility staff to ensure proper patient care and accurate order information.

Perform patient registration and order entry in Epic, ensuring all required information and documentation is obtained.

Process and handle lab specimens according to test-specific requirements to ensure stability and safe transport.

Perform EKGs, recognize critical results and follow appropriate reporting procedures.

Serve as the face of the laboratory, utilizing excellent customer service skills and assisting clients with their questions.

Adhere to all infection control procedures and prescribed safety techniques to maintain a safe environment.

Participate in quality assurance activities and help maintain draw site supplies and maintenance.

Required qualifications High school diploma or GED.

Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or equivalent work experience creating eligibility to sit for a nationally recognized certification exam.

Certified Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification required within six months of hire (ASCP, NHA, NHCO, or an alternate certifying agency may be approved by the leader if the exam is proctored).

Additional information Candidates will thrive by demonstrating at least one year of related experience in a clinical, medical office or research setting, along with familiarity with team processes and quality management.

Success in this role is built upon a thorough and current knowledge of phlebotomy principles, techniques and safety precautions.

A strong aptitude for detecting and investigating problems, making evidence-based evaluations and providing consultation to physicians and nurses is essential.
